    Editorial

You think you've seen it all on the Internet - but no: Your constantly up for surprises. Wednesday when surfing the Internet and reading my mail I got a link to the new website by the Danish private operator TraXion. Well, took a look... surprised I asked myself: "Hey, where did I see that photo before. It looks like a photo by Niels Karsdorp on Rail-O-Rama. And hey, that photo, it looks very much like the photo of MY 1159 that I took about a year ago, only reversed. It is my photo! And that ferry, that's M/F Kong Frederik IX and that one is M/F Danmark, also from my photo section on Rail-O-Rama!". I was of course very surprised, as I had not been asked for permission for use on this website. I came in contact with TraXion, who was sorry that the webdesigner assigned for the job had not cleared the use of the photos with me.

Of course people save photos and files from the Internet on their own computers. That's fine by me. But to rip of photos for commercial use, without asking or paying for it - that's where my limit goes! I've now come to an agreement with TraXion as this nice guy I am, but must say, professionally working as Internet-designer myself, that I'm very disappointed with anyone who are so stupid as not to know basic copyright issues. I hope this will be a one-timer - but must clarify that all articles and photos on Rail-O-Rama of course are copyrighted! All photos by other photographers are used in agreement with these photographers and may not be redistributed without the content of the copyright holders.

Well - and here's the original photos used on www.traxion.dk for your enjoyment...

    Railway Industry

Windhoff AG taken over by Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH: Windhoff AG, Rheine is known for building various shunters (the Windhoff TeleTrac), the CargoSprinter and other specialised rail vehicles. However the company went broke from 1. March 2002, but was taken over by Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH, Georgsmarienhütte. The company will still produce its range of railway and industrial engineering. New name will be Windhoff Bahn- und Anlagentechnik GmbH (18. March 2002, sources Lok-Report and Windhoff).

Denmark: Danske Statsbaner (DSB) & private railways

VLTJ Nohabs: The former DSB MY 1152, which was taken over by VLTJ in October-November 2001, has been renumbered VLTJ MY 28 and named Viktoria. On 27. March 2002 it had one of its first runs for VLTJ, when it worked PG 7828 to Skive and return on PG 7736. The loco on lease from Østbanen since 1999, ØSJS Mx 41 Kong Hother, will be returned from 1. May, from when VLTJ MX 26 and MY 28 will handle all freight trains (29. March 2002, various sources).
In fact, MY 28 had its first working on 4. March to Skive and has also worked a train for Århus with exhibition-coaches on 5. March 2002. LJ M 36 was returned to Lollandsbanen on 4-5. December 2001 (2. April 2002).

Lollandsbanen freight workings: The former DSB MY 1153 has been renumbered as LJ M38 and is being repainted into new livery based on the IC2-design with red front ends, blue middle part and white stripes. The official roll-out will be on 10. April 2002, while first working to Næstved will be on 16. April 2002. Trains will leave Nakskov around 5.00 for Næstved, then return around 13.00. On the other hand two of the old MX-locos is up for sale, propably to Sweden.

The last Railion freight trains for Nykøbing F. will run on 3., 4., 9. and 11. April in the following plan:

EuroRail/NVAG MY 1148: MY 1148 is currently stored in Padborg, awaiting new duties, as the cooperation between Europrail Leasing and NVAG went bad. While NVAG had the loco repainted last year it never had ATC safety system installed by the private owning the loco. Also, the main engine was claimed by the estate of bankrupcy of Privatbanen Sønderjylland, because it was swapped from ex-PBS MY 1120 (29. March 2002, various sources).

Easter museum workings: DSB Museum are working several trains during Easter. On the Copenhagen suburban S-train net the 1934-build MM 718-FM 874-MM 732 are working between Høje Taastrup and Hillerød on 28. and 31. March, while workings between Høje Taastrup-Klampenborg, Klampenborg-Ballerup, Ballerup-Farum and Farum-Høje Taastrup are made on 29. March and 1. April.
The DSB Museumstog are working trains between Odense and Nyborg with the "Sølvpilen" lyntog class MA.

Detailed timetable of the S-tog workings can be found on www.dsb.dk/stog/. Photo by Colin Bennett from Valby on 28. March 2002 (29. March 2002).

Nestlé to close: One of the last industrial railways of Denmark, worked by Nestlé in Hjørring, is to end in August 2002, when the factory in Hjørring ceases operation. Nestlé works a single diesel shunter (Schöma 3080/1969), while Nordjydske Jernbaner runs the freight wagons for Hjørring (29. March 2002, source Børsen).

Nordjydske Jernbaner A/S: Former DSB MY 1146 was transferred to Aalborg in train G7903. On 15. March 2002 it was taken to Hjørring by NJ M 9 in the ordinary freight train and will have minor refurbishments and new livery at the Hjørring works before entering service mid-April. Nordjydske Jernbaner A/S was formed of Skagensbanen and Hjørring Privatbaner in 2001. The locomotives are now being applied with the new logo, so far NJ M 9 (former SB M 9, ex. DSB MX 1041) and NJ M 10 (former SB M 10, ex. DSB MX 1038) has the new logo, while SB M 11 is still with its SB logo. The Dieselhydraulic locomotive HP 16 (Henschel 31949/1976) has been sold to Germany and will leave Denmark when MY 1146 enters traffic. Nordjydske Jernbaner A/S on the internet: www.njba.dk (18. March 2002).

More class ME repaintings: ME 1524 was rolled out from the Århus works on 17. March 2002 in the new livery, and was second (dead) engine in train IR 1662 to Copenhagen on the same day. On 18. March it started working on Kalundborg and Nykøbing F. regional turns (18. March 2002).

Freight shunting to Ringsted and Kolding: Railion Denmark will use Ringsted and Kolding as the major marshalling yards for the freight traffic from 2. April 2002. This will mean the end of the Copenhagen Freight yard for large shunting purposes and only a single class MK will remain here. The freight trains for Sweden, which now changes direction in Vigerslev will cease and wagons will be interchanged in Ringsted.
Instead Ringsted will have two MK's (again) and freight for Køge will go via Næstved. Most freight train timetables will be totally changed from 2. April (18. March 2002).

DSB ME 1523 repainted in dark blue: DSB ME 1523 left the Århus Works on 3. March 2002 in the new dark blue livery of DSB, which will be applied to the 20 last-built ME's (1518-1537), which are to work the comming double-stock coaches and thus also are being fitted with ZWS (Zeitmultiplexe Wendezug Steuerung). It is planned that one loco will be repainted every 14 days (6. March 2002).
Photo by Mikkel Elling of ME 1523 in Kalundborg on 9. March 2002. More photos can be found on www.mikkel-elling.dk.

More Desiros for DSB: DSB will have 12 new Desiros on lease for the Odense-Svendborg line from August 2002. The new DMUS's will be leased for four years, delivered with Automatic Train Control (ATC), have more powerfull engines and all seats will be similar to those of 1st Class standard with DBAG. Also the number of seats pr. unit will be reduced from 124 to 114. The units will replace all MR/D and the 3 MQ now used on the Odense-Svendborg line. They will be livered in the new dark blue and grey DSB colors (1. March 2002, source DSB).

Railion EG's without "Gods"-logos: The Railion class EG electric locomotives are currently loosing their large "Gods"-logos on the sides. So far EG 3103, 3106 and 3107 has been seen without logos. New "Railion"-logos will not be applied until this summer (1. March 2002).

Railion EG 3110 is now the only loco still to sport the "DSB" and "GODS"-logo. Also most class EA (only 3012 and 3019 left) and MZ-locos has lost their DSB markings at the time of writing (29. March 2002).

Snow chaos: Denmark was hit by two snow storms on the nights between 19-20. and again on 21-22. February 2002, which caused quite a riot for rail traffic. On the night of 20. February an Intercity service from Copenhagen to Fredericia hit a tree near Aarup on Fyn, which caused the front of the EMU ER 2133 to be smashed. Also 700 meters of electric wires was torn down, so train traffic was blocked until thursday around midday. From then one track on the double-track mainline was available, but causing large delays. On the Høng-Tølløse Jernbane a car was hit by a train on 20. February near Tølløse, when the driver ran out in front of the train. "Luckily" the driver didn't wear a seat belt and was thrown out of his car, which was then completely crushed under the Lynette-DMU.

As a new heavy snowfall hit Denmark on the night of 21-22. February there were problems with the remote control of the tracks in Vamdrup, which almost closed the Fredericia-Tinglev-Sønderborg/Padborg line during the night. On Odderbanen HHJ DL 10 was used as snow plough. In Fredericia TraXion MY 1157 was used as stand-by loco with two of the large snowploughs of Banestyrelsen, but not used (22. February 2002, source DSB, BT, FredericiaOnline and others).
Two photos by Colin Bennett added on 1. March 2002.

3 class MK returned to DSB: MK 601-603 has been returned from Railion Denmark A/S to DSB and the locos are currently at the Copenhagen Depot. DSB also owns MK 625, which are being used at the passenger depot at Belvedere in Copenhagen (12. February 2002. On the photo: MK 603 which has been shunting in Odense since delivery in 1996).

MY's to Lollandsbanen and Skagensbanen: Lollandsbanen has bought DSB MY 1153, which is to be delivered in February 2002 after overhaul with the DSB workshop in Copenhagen. Lollandsbanen is to take over freight operation on the Nykøbing F. to Næstved-line from Railion when the new loco is delivered.

Also Skagensbanen has bought a class MY, DSB MY 1146, which is also to be overhauled in the Copenhagen works and go to Skagen in March. Both locos are equipped with ATC and can thus run on the Banestyrelsen mainlines, which the former class MX locos with both railways are not allowed for (17. January 2002).

    MY 1153 was taken to Nykøbing F. on 18. February 2002 in tow by MZ 1425 as train M 6129 (22.February 2002)

On the photos: DSB MY 1153 shunting in Vordingborg back in 1991. Whether Lollandsbanen will serve this station is not yet known, but freight traffic handled by Railion for Vordingborg has ended.

DSB orders another 25 double-stock coaches: DSB has added another 25 coaches to the number of double-stock coaches to be leased from Porterbrook UK. The first 42 coaches will be used on the Nordvestbanen to Holbæk and Kalundborg, but also the Sydbanen to Næstved and Nykøbing F. will now be serviced with new passenger stock from the autumn 2002. This will probably be the end of a large number of the type Bn-coaches now in use on these lines. A total of 20 class ME diesel locos will now be rebuild with ZWS for use with the German-build coaches (17. January 2002, source www.dsb.dk).

OHJ accident: A tragic accident happened on 2. January 2002, when a woman was killed when her car was hit by a Nykøbing S - Holbæk OHJ regional service south of Gislinge. Both the car and the OHJ DMU Ym 58 caught fire and it took firemen half an hour to extinguish the fire. Apparently the woman entered the crossing without seeing the train (2. January 2002).

Arriva to run lines in Jylland from 2003: The Danish board of traffic, Trafikministeriet, has selected the future operator of the lines in Jylland which where put out for tenders in May 2001. Five companies, Arriva, Connex, DB Regio, DSB and Serco Rail, bid on the Århus – Langå – Struer, Thisted - Struer, Struer – Skjern, Århus – Herning, Herning – Skjern – Esbjerg and Esbjerg - Tønder lines in September 2001.

On 28. December Trafikministeriet published that the lines will be operated by Arriva in the years 2003-2010. Arriva will receive a yearly payment of appr. 156 mio. DKr (13 mio €). New trainsets will be used and Arriva will probably use the old Struer works for maintenance.

The bid by DSB was the cheapest, but was rejected under much press attention as it was estimated not to be able to give profit during the entire 8 years period. Several parties has criticized the whole board of DSB for giving a to low and not acceptable bid (2. January 2002, source Trafikministeriet. The Bid details. Arriva on the Internet: So far www.arriva.dk opens in an entirely English-spoken version of www.arriva.co.uk).

Railion MZ's back to DSB: The 6 class MZ I/II on lease from DSB to Railion will be returned following the timetable change on 6. January 2002. MZ 1403, 1404, 1405, 1408, 1411 and 1419 has been on lease since this summer. MZ 1406 and 1425 which are on loan while the MZ IV's are being rebuild for fire safety reasons, will remain in use for another couple of weeks. All locos will probably be stored, eventually sold (2. January 2002).

The class MZ's on lease from DSB, MZ 1403, 1404, 1405, 1406, 1408, 1411, 1419, 1425 has been returned to DSB mid-January 2002. 6 of the locos where put to store, while 1403 and 1419 is kept for reserve locos at the Copenhagen depot.
    Last days of workings were:
    MZ 1404: 4. January 2002
    MZ 1405: 6. January 2002
    MZ 1406: 24. January 2002
    MZ 1408: end January 2002
    MZ 1411: 19. January 2002
    MZ 1425: 7. January 2002
    (12. February 2002).

Austria: Österreichische Bundesbahn (ÖBB) & private railways

Old Austrian electrics withdrawn: A number of electric locos of the classes 1010, 1110, 1040, 1041, 1141 and 1042 was withdrawn on 1. March 2002. Most of the old locos are being replaced by class 1044, which again are being replaced by the new-delivered Taurus class 1116. The workings into Germany will be restricted to classes 1044, 1016 and 1116 from 1. April 2002. All class 1010, 1040 and 1110 are suspected to be withdrawn by the end of 2002.

The classes 1822 and 1012, of which are only build in 5 respectively 3, are still running on the Innsbruck to Linz and Kufstein-Brenner lines, plans of putting the locos up for sale has been cancelled (6. March 2002, source Elektrolok).

Tragic accident at Wampersdorf: Six people where killed and 15 injured in a tragic accident at Wampersdorf near Wien on 26. February 2002, when freight train 46682 hauled by ÖBB 1142 685 ran into the "Rollende Landstrasse" freight train 42635 hauled by ÖBB 1044 213 to Sopron, Hungary. 6 lorry drivers were killed as the loco was pushed back into the couchette coupled behind the loco. Both loco drivers survived by jumping of their trains. The reason for the accident was probably defect brakes in freight train 46682 from Sopron to Wien-Kledering, which was to stop in Wampersdorf. The ROLA freight train 42635 from Wels to Sopron had been warned and totally stopped before being hit by the 46682.

Again on 27. February 2002 an accident occured, when two freight trains collided at Wien-Erdberg between Wien-Kledering and Stadlau. The loco drivers where trapped, but could be rescued. A tank wagon leaked, but the fluid were harmless (27. February 2002, sources Lok-Report, ORF and APA).

Class 2016 in delivery: The first of the Siemens/Krauss-Maffei dieselelectric locos Reihe 2016 was handed over to ÖBB on 10. January 2002. A total of 70 locos of this class, known as Hercules in Austria, is on order and going to replace older diesel locos. The locos weights 80 tons, has a max. speed of 140 km/h and an output of 2000 kW. Other operators has also shown interest in the loco-type, marked as Eurorunner by Siemens (13 February 2002, photo and source Siemens Transportation Systems).

    Estonia: Eesti Raudtee (EVR)

Former American General Electric locos to Eesti Raudtee: The Estonia Railways EVR is currently running an extensive investment programme which provides the total replacement of the existing locomotive fleet with rebuilt and gauge-converted locomotives from USA. There will be 58 former Union Pacific (and before that, former
Missouri Pacific) C36-7 units and 19 former Conrail C30-7A units (The "A" designates a 12 cylinder engine). They will be modified for international service, and will be designated as C30-7i units. Only basic overhaul and safely modifications are being carried out. Locos will look and sound (!!) the same as in US days! Loco's are being
overhauled in Mexico. Locos should start arriving from April, delivery complete by December (6. March 2002, sources EVR and World-Diesel-Loco).

Germany: Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) & private railways

103 101 also up for preservation: DB 103 172 was stored from 13. March 2002 and will probably be scrapped. DB 103 101 was stored from 15. March 2002 and will be preserved by Eisenbahnmuseum Darmstadt-Kranichstein. A lot of 103's are currently used on the extra trains for the CeBit computer fair in Hannover from 13. - 20. March 2002, but are also slowly but surely on the way out (18. March 2002, sources Lok-Report and elektrolok.de).

1200 IC/EC coaches to be modernised: A total of 1198 coaches, 145 locomotives and 107 driving trailers will be modernised by Deutsche Bahn until the end of 2003. The work will be carried out in Neumünster, Delitzsch and Wittenberge and will include new internal color schemes, new chairs, electronic information systems and more (18. March 2002, source Lok-Report).

Class 232 rebuildings: As mentioned earlier on the Rail-O-Rama news a total of 64 DB-Cargo class 232's is currently being rebuild with new Kolomna 12-Cylinder diesel engines by the Cottbus works. The locos will be new class 233. First test loco is 232 702-1 (18. March 2002, source Lok-Report).

103 224 for preservation: Newly withdrawn 103 224 are being prepared for preservation at the workshop of VogtlandBahn/RegentalBahn in Neumark. The loco ran its last train on 16. February 2002, after which the buffer lining was reapplied and the loco transfered to Neumark for body-overhaul. The loco will be preserved at the Museum-Bw Bochum-Dahlhausen (6. March 2002, source elektrolok).

Class 612 tilting mechanism blocked: Due to annormalities in the tilting mechanism in a DMU Baureihe 612, all 110 members of this class is running at lower speed and without tilting technique at the moment. Bombardier Transportation will check all vehicles during the next weeks. This delayes regional services in many parts of Germany (14. February 2002, source DB Presse ).

Mora-C successful: The timetable-change in January 2002, which included the closure of more than 500 small Güterverkehrsstellen on 31. December 2001, is regarded as successful by DB-Cargo. DB-Cargo had calculated that 95% of the income was from 2520 large customers, while another 6600 customers only gave 5% income but a far larger part of the expenses. However, private operators was allowed to take over traffic to some of the small customers, as it was expected that these smaller operators could handle this traffic more economical. Details of these workings can be found (in German) on www.railfan.de.
Another 200 small Güterverkehrsstellen will be taken into consideration until 15. December 2002 (13. February 2002, source DB Presse).

NVAG freight traffic with leased class 212's: NVAG has leased 3 locos from DB for use on the additional freight trains following the Mora-C concept (see above). Three refurbished ex. M61.010 to be preserved: On Wednesday, 28 November 2001, Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) and the NoHAB-GM Foundation of Hungary signed a contract to sell M61.010 to the latter. The locomotive costs 8.125.000 HUF (approx. 31800 €). The Foundation has collected 5.000.000 HUF so far from donations and loans but needs to raise the other appr. 7.500 GBP until the begin of March. The locomotive purchased by our foundation was transferred to its new storage place on December 21st, 2001 at 10:30 AM. The first technical inspection found no major damages, except for the batteries which were in a heavily worn state. Further inspection and repairs will be carried out next year. We will give further information about storage and accessibility of the machine as soon as possible.

The Foundation plans of course to keep the loco in working condition and run railtours after the wheelsets will be exchanged (2. January 2002, source Akos Horvath, www.nohab-gm.com).

    ÖBB class 1043
The first 4 ÖBB-Reihe 1043 where delivered by ASEA of Sweden in October 1971, with a power rating of 3600 kW and max. speed 135 km/h, while the next 6 followed a year later with 4000 kW power rating. The locos where successful, but partly as Austrian loco builders where protesting against import of locos and partly because ÖBB where in need of locos capable of higher speed no more locos where ordered. The locos where delivered in the typical Swedish livery of orange, but where later repainted in austrain design. Also the Swedish headlights in top of the cabs where rebuild to a single light. The locos where initially based in Villach and used for heavy freight and passenger services. In the 1990's they where used for regional services as well as small freights. 1043 005 where withdrawn in 1999 following an accident in the Linz works, when the loco fell down from a lifting stand and had a bend frame. It was considered to have the loco repaired by ASEA, but instead the loco where withdrawn. As new class 1016 Taurus locos where delivered to ÖBB the 1043 class where no longer needed and on 21. September 2001 Tågab confirmed that they had bought the 9 remaining locos.
