Danstål, Det Danske Stålvalseværk, Frederiksværk motive power (Steel recycling plant)

Danish Steelworks Ltd. was founded during the second World-war in 1942, while the Central European Steel Cartel imposed a duty of 30% on the sale of steel to Scandinavia to protect the other European countries against the competitive Scandinavian shipyards.

The Steelworks is located in Frederiksvaerk, approximately 60 km north of Copenhagen, where there is easy access to cooling water from lake Arresø and good transport links by sea, rail and road. Approximately 1200 employees produce about 800,000 tons of rolled steel products each year in the form of steel plates and bar steel. The raw material is steel scrap collected mainly in Denmark.

The works runs an impressive railway of about 10 km's, both for internal use and for loading of steel products for export. During the years 14 normal gauge and 5 narrow gauge steam locos has been in service, while 21 normal gauge and 6 narrow gauge motorlocos has been used. Most of the locos has been bought second-hand and once they where worn out they where simply run into the melting ovens!

Danstål went bankrupt in the summer of 2002. Parts of the works has later been taken over by a new company, which started production of steel plates in December 2002, but whether the internal railway is still is use is not known. How many of the locos mentioned below still in use/preserved is also not known at this point.

Motive power changes 2001:
- DSB MH 396 and MH 403 was bought from DSB and arrived in Hillerød on 19. August 2001.
Motive power changes 2000:
- DSB MH 365 was withdrawn in 1997 and then stored for a couple of years. Summer 2000 it was sold for scrapping to Uniscrap (Copenhagen), but then sold to Danstål for spare parts and then finally scrapped (probably melted!) in the autumn of 2000.
Motive power changes 1999:
- From DSB has been bought dieselhydraulic shunter MH 364.
